                  Herbal Remedies For Anxiety

Herbal remedies for anxiety vary in their effectiveness and although prescription drugs are also effective, they are habit forming, dangerous if used with alcohol and expensive. For many the safety and relative effectiveness of natural herbal remedies for anxiety are a real life saver.

It's estimated that nearly 20% of the population suffers from panic attacks or some other form of anxiety. Many think having anxiety means that the person has some huge psychological problem but this is not an accurate picture. For instance, if your car stalls on a railroad crossing any "normal" person would have some degree of anxiety.

Anxiety tells us that deep down something is wrong. In the case about the train this all makes sense. But in other circumstances when there isn't a real or life threatening problem, anxiety can be a real debilitating illness.

Anxiety has 2 basic forms: reactive and underlying. The former is from a situation that one is currently in the other is from a past situation that still has a grip on the sufferer. These are a bit different from panic attacks which come on with blazing speed from seemingly no where.

Fortunately, there are herbal remedies for anxiety that can help help both forms of anxiety and panic attacks.

Skullcap is a very widely used herbal remedy for anxiety and has been used in Europse and China for hundreds of years. Skullcap also helps with panic attacks, insomnia and other forms of anxiety and depression. It's even more effective when combined with Valerian.

Valerian is herb that in clinical trials has shown to relieve anxiety and ease panic attacks. Tincutures of Valerian work fairly quickly and can be taken in small doses of around 150 to 250 milligrams a couple times a day.

Motherwort has a rich history of being given to expectant women in Greece to ease their worries during pregnancy. It was also used for postpartum depression. It has an effect of lowering blood pressure. It can be taken as a tincture or tonic 2 or 3 times per day. Nowadays it is used for those suffering from heart palpitations and general anxiety.

Passion flower has also been shown to ease anxiety. Most extracts are standardized at around 4 percent.

St. John's Wort is also another effective herbal remedy for anxiety. It has also been used for years widely in both the U.S. and Europe for relieving depression. In some clinical trials it has been shown to outperform even the widest selling doctor prescribed and somewhat dangerous depression prescriptions.
