What is Psoriasis? What Causes Psoriasis?
What is Psoriasis? Psoriasis is a skin condition that affects both men and women of all races. Most
often, its symptoms first appear when a person is aged between 15 and 30. It occurs when skin cells reproduce
rapidly and results in thickened skin. Most often, Psoriasis affects the elbows, knees, arms, legs, groin and
the scalp. What does Psoriasis look like? There are different types of Psoriasis which is why it may look
different from one another.
In general though, it is characterized by dry, scaly and patchy skin that can be itchy and painful when left
untreated. Its symptoms can be either mild or severe. In severe cases, it can interfere with a person’s daily life
including his or her work and social activities.
Many people ask, what causes Psoriasis? To this day, its exact cause is not known.
However, many experts believe that Psoriasis is hereditary. If some members of your family have been
diagnosed with it, your chances of getting it are increased. A faulty immune system has been linked to it as
well. Here are some pictures of common psoriasis. Courtesy of Wikipedia.
A research conducted in the United States showed that when people have Psoriasis, their T cells (a
type of white blood cell that fights virus and bacteria) trigger a reaction in the skin cells by mistake.
This in turn causes the skin cells to reproduce in a matter of days rather than weeks.
There can be other triggers as well such as environmental
factors, stress or another illness.
Another question that many would like to know is this – is Psoriasis contagious? It is not. The skin disease will
not be passed on to you simply by touching or having intimate contact with someone diagnosed with it.
What is the Difference Between Psoriasis and
Eczema?
Because both are skin conditions that appear to be somehow alike, many people ask – what is the difference between
Psoriasis and Eczema? The causes of Eczema and Psoriasis are not similar. Often, skin irritants such as detergent
and perfume are the main causes of Eczema. The exact cause of Psoriasis meanwhile is not known although it is believed that the skin
disease is hereditary. The photo to the right is of eczema and is courtesy of
Wikipedia.
Although the appearance of its symptoms has some similarities, you can tell Eczema apart from Psoriasis simply by
looking at the skin. Eczema is characterized as having small blisters or raised spots that can be very
itchy. The symptom of Psoriasis, on the other hand, is having reddish, dry and raised skin. It can be
itchy too but what makes it
different is that it can be flaky and can lead to
bleeding if it is not treated promptly.
