The First
Signs of Menopause
Signs and Symptoms of Menopause
What are the first signs of menopause?
There are several signs and symptoms of menopause that women who are aging can look out for. Referred to as “the
big change” in a woman’s life, menopause is a normal process in a woman’s body which results in changes in
monthly menstrual cycles. Most often, menopause is experienced by women in their late 40s or early
50s.
Other Early
Menopause Signs One of the most common signs and symptoms
in menopause is the change in menstrual cycles. Because of hormonal imbalance, a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle
may come early if not delayed as she gets older. However, it is important to know that diet and nutrition can be
causes as well of delayed menstrual cycle. When nearing menopause, there also can be noticeable changes in a
woman’s pre and post menstrual symptoms.
Cramps and other menstrual related symptoms can become more intense and frequent. The reason for this is that PMS
(pre menstrual syndrome) is a telling sign of hormonal imbalance. Because menopause is the cause of an imbalance in
a woman’s hormones, her PMS then will worsen. Scientific research has shown that hormones have an effect on a
person’s mood. Due to this, menopausal women may become more prone to mood swings and even to depression. They may
experience happiness which can easily alter to loneliness because of their hormonal changes. This may, in turn,
cause lack of sleep in women. Because of their mood swings, they may find it hard to sleep well.
Insomnia Can
Be Another First Sign of Menopause Other causes of insomnia include night
sweats and hot flashes. Another early sign of menopause is weight gain. Changes or imbalance in hormones affect
a person’s metabolism. The body will find it hard then to burn off excess fat and may also contribute to water
retention. A drop in estrogen levels can lead to drying of the vaginal walls. This can cause less sexual
activity as less lubrication can result in painful intercourse. In some cases however, this can be addressed by
taking more fluids.
Hormonal imbalance can also result in lack of drive for sex in some women. There can be two reasons for this.
First, a woman’s depression may leave her feeling unwanted and unattractive and may then opt to pass sex. Second,
the pain of sexual intercourse due to vaginal dryness can also be the reason why a woman may lose interest in
having sex.
Should a woman experience the first
symptoms of menopause, she should immediately speak with her doctor. It is important to rule out other
conditions that share the same symptoms as menopause. The doctor may also look at their health profile as well
as that of their mother’s in order to get a better idea of their medical history and better help them treat
their symptoms.
