What are the Signs of Menopause?
There are various signs of menopause to
help women determine if they are indeed experiencing it. Menopause is a natural way of life and all women are
bound to experience it at different ages. It involves changes in a woman’s body that result in changes in her
monthly periods and eventually, the halting of it. The intensity and frequency of menopause related
symptoms vary in each woman. Besides that, there are also premenopausal
symptoms which most women experience 10 to 15 years prior to having
menopause.
What are the early signs of menopause? One of its first sign is a noticeable change in a woman’s
monthly period. It can become irregular – coming either weeks early or delayed. They may also notice lighter
or heavier than usual discharge. Menstrual irregularity is more common on women in their mid-40s. This is
mainly caused by a decrease in estrogen production.
Other
Telling Signs of Menopause One of the most common first signs of menopause is
hot flashes. This is when women experience
a sudden rush of heat in their upper body. Whether this is mild or severe, women should not worry as this is
normal. Night sweats is almost similar to hot flashes except that it happens at night obviously. It occurs when
women perspire during sleep. This is seen as one of the reasons why women experience sleep problems. Night
sweats make it difficult for them to fall asleep. Some, however, struggle to stay awake.
It is common for menopausal women to lose interest in sex. Hormonal imbalance can be the reason for
diminished sex drive. However, vaginal dryness can also be considered as one of the reasons for this. When
estrogen production drops, the vaginal walls dry out and this can make having sex uncomfortable if not
painful.
Women experiencing menopause may also undergo emotional changes. Imbalances in the hormones have an
effect on a person’s emotions. This is why depression and menopause are closely linked. Women
undergoing menopausal transition may also be prone to chronic fatigue – a feeling of weakness, tiredness and
low energy levels.
There are various treatments available
to reduce the frequency and severity of menopause symptoms. Many women, however, are opting for natural remedies for menopause. These include
herbal
remedies such as Black Cohosh , Dong Quai and St. John’s Wort. Women
can also give alternative medicine a try. They may be
advised to increase their intake of particular food like Soy and to regularly take vitamins
and supplements to help relieve their menopausal
symptoms.
