Signs and Symptoms of Depression
It is natural for everyone to have moments of sadness and loneliness particularly when faced with loss, problems or
stress brought about by many different factors. However, when these feelings last for a longer period of time or
when these become a hindrance to living a normal life, then that is the time that one should start seeking medical
attention.
Identifying the symptoms of depression is one of the biggest challenges to treating
depression.
Statistics show that almost half of people experiencing depression symptoms are never diagnosed and do not get the
appropriate treatment for their depression. Not being able to get treatment is critical as more than 1 out of 10
people who have depression commit suicide. Therefore, it is important to determine the many symptoms and give
proper treatment before it worsens and becomes life threatening.
Signs and Symptoms of Depression include:
-
Persistent sadness and pessimism
-
Feelings of guilt, helplessness, “emptiness” and
hopelessness
-
Loss of interest in activities which were once pleasurable –
including sex
-
Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making
decisions as well as complaints of having poor memory
-
Exhibiting slow movements and slow
speech
-
Insomnia, early morning wakefulness or excessive
sleep
-
In turn, the individual may experience fatigue and
lethargy
-
Loss of appetite if not overeat
-
Irritability and restlessness may also be
present
-
Depression sufferers may also complain of persistent pain or
aches, cramps or digestive problems which do not ease amid receiving proper treatment for it.
There are warning signs of depression and if any of these are noticed in
an individual, it is advisable to immediately seek professional help. It includes sudden switch from being sad
to appearing happy. The worsening of clinical depression symptoms – which include deep sadness, loss of
interest, difficulty sleeping and eating – is a sign as well. Depressed individuals also consistently think
about death and having a death wish – even tempting fate by taking risks which are life threatening.
Signs and Symptoms of Depression - Some Warning Signs
They also make comments about how hopeless, worthless and helpless they are. Common phrases they use are “it would
be better if I was not here” or “I want out.” Some do things out of the ordinary like suddenly visiting or calling
their loved ones, putting affairs in order and changing their will. An extremely alarming sign is when
an individual talks about killing himself or herself. Many do not take this seriously when in fact it is one of the
most obvious signs of depression.
If someone you know is exhibiting any of these warning symptoms, make sure to seek medical
help right away. Keep in mind that every individual has their low moments. If they cannot seem to recover from
it or if their symptoms are starting to affect their daily lives – that is the time they should seek
professional help. Also, a depressed individual has a high probability of committing suicide. Therefore, someone
who starts talking about having thoughts of taking his or her own life should be taken very
seriously.
