Natural Treatments For Depression
Millions of people around the world have depression and majority of them are not aware that they are suffering
from it. Depression is curable although most of the people suffering from depression do not seek medical help.
However, there are several natural treatments for depression. It is important though to consult your doctor
particularly if you are using doctor prescribed medication.
St. John's Wort - A Proven Natural Treatment for Depression
Results of over 20 clinical trials suggest that the herb St. John’s Wort is effective in treating mild to
moderate depression. It has long been used in folk medicine to treat sadness, worry, nervousness and poor
sleep. It may take 4 to 6 weeks before results are seen.
Side effects may include dizziness, dry mouth, indigestion and fatigue. Although St. John’s Wort is
safe to take, it may interfere with the effectiveness of prescription drugs being taken at the same
time. The herb is not recommended for pregnant and nursing women, children or people with
bipolar disorder and those with liver or kidney disease. St. John’s Wort is available in drug
stores and online in the form of capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, or tea.
Other Treatments For Depression
Another natural treatment for depression is green tea. A recent Japanese study suggests that
green tea may be effective in fighting depression particularly in older men and women. Researched
discovered that people over the age of 70 who drank more than 4 cups of green tea a day are less likely to
have depression than people the same age who drank less than the said amount.
It is worth noting that green tea’s cousins – oolong and black tea – do not have the
anti-depression effect as green tea. This is because, although harvested from the same plant,
both oolong and black tea do not have theanine which is present in green tea. Theanine is an
amino acid similar to glutamate which, according to scientists, has a calming effect on the brain. This
apparently is the reason why green tea is an effective natural anti-depressant.
Rose Petals For Depression
There are other various kinds of teas which have anti-depressant benefits. Rose petals are
believed to be effective in reducing depression symptoms. Prepare the tea by adding rose petals to boiling
water. Let the mixture stand and cool. Take it 2-3 times daily. Add sugar as necessary. One can drink
this whenever feeling depressed.
Licorice Tea Licorice Tea is also recommended because Licorice helps in
depression treatment. It is ideal to have at least three cups of Licorice Tea per day. A tea made of holy
basil and sage should also be tried. The tea is made by adding ¼ teaspoon of holy basil and ½ teaspoon of
sage to a hot cup of water. The said tea can be taken up to a couple of cups each day.
Chamomile For something even simpler than this, try infusing a teaspoon of
chamomile in a cup of boiling water.
