Medications that Cause Hair Loss:
Zoloft, Zetia and Hair Loss
Although medications are designed to treat people of illnesses, often there are medications that
cause hair loss if not excess hair. These are only some of the unwanted side effects some medications have on
a person. It is no secret that hair loss has a tremendous impact on someone’s self-esteem. It is for this
reason that many opt to stop taking their medicines for fear of or to stop the hair from falling
off.
Drugs can interfere with the hair’s normal growth. Medications can lead to two types of hair loss –
Telogen Effluvium and Anagen Effluvium. Telogen Effluvium
is the most common type of drug related hair loss. After taking a certain drug, hair loss may start to
appear 3 to 4 months after. Here, the hair follicles go into their resting period and fall off too early.
Among medications that cause hair loss under Telogen Effluvium include antibiotics, birth control pills,
anticoagulants, steroid, thyroid medications and weight loss pills.
Antidepressants are also thought to cause hair loss and an example of this is the drug
Zoloft. Hair loss is one of its side effects and it is reported in 1 of 100 people
taking it. Some people taking the drug said hair loss started to become apparent after 6 to 8 months. It is
unclear however if it is Zoloft that is causing the hair loss or the emotional stress that people go through.
Zetia and hair loss have also been closely linked.
Zetia is a drug used to treat high cholesterol. Hair loss is only one of the
several side effects that can be caused by the said drug. It does not necessarily mean that a person taking
it will experience the symptom. Doctors may also be able to prescribe other drug medications to counter hair
loss caused by Zetia.
The other type of hair loss due to medications is known as Anagen Effluvium. Here, hair loss occurs
in days or weeks after taking the medication. Common medications classified under Anagen Effluvium are
chemotherapy drugs. Although these are designed to attack cancer cells all over the body, it can also be
damaging to a person’s healthy cells including the hair cells.
