Hair Regrowth For Women
Many people are interested in learning more about the different options for hair regrowth for women.
Although men are the ones who most often experience hair loss, women can fall victim to it as
well. However, female hair loss has become a growing problem which according to the American Academy of
Dermatology affects around 30 million women in the United States alone.
There are various factors that can be behind this such as genetics and even lack of nutrients. However, many women
find it difficult to cope with hair loss. It is a good thing that there are hair treatments available today that
women can undergo in answer to their hair loss.
Minoxidil is a medication used to treat high blood pressure. However, experts have noticed that
taking the drug experienced hair growth as well. Minoxidil can also be applied directly to the scalp in order
to stimulate hair growth. Applying it directly to the scalp is not known to have external or internal side
effects. Dermatologists usually prescribe Minoxidil 5% solution. Clinical trials have shown that 5% solution
is effective in both retaining hair and stimulating hair regrowth for women.
Spironolactone is considered as potassium-sparing diuretics and is also known as water pills. It
helps promote hair regrowth for women in two ways. First, it slows down the production of androgen in the
ovaries. Second, it prevents DHT (dihydrotestosterone) from binding to the hair follicles. When DHT binds to
hair follicles, it prevents it from receiving sufficient nutrients from the blood which result in hair
thinning and eventually, hair loss. Spironolactone dosages for women vary so it is important to consult your
doctor if you are planning on taking it for hair regrowth.
Birth control pills or oral contraceptives are another hair regrowth treatment for
women. Because this kind of pill is able to decrease the production of ovarian androgens, it can be used to
treat androgenic alopecia – a common form of hair loss in women. Contraceptives come in various formulations
so it is best to discuss it with your doctor so he or she can determine the best one for your needs. As a
rule, only low-androgen birth control pills are used for hair regrowth as high-androgen pills may actually
trigger hair loss.
If the hair loss is caused by fungal infections, women may be prescribed to use
Ketoconazole. Aside from fighting fungal infections, it also is able to curb the production of testosterone
and other androgen which are seen as the one of the main causes of hair loss among women. There are shampoos
that contain 2% Ketoconazole solution and 1% solution that can be bought over the counter. However, it is
believed that 2% is much more effective for hair regrowth for women.
