Adult Cystic Acne
Although it is most common in teenagers, cystic acne may also affect adults. What is cystic acne? Cystic
or nodulocystic acne is a cyst that becomes infected and pus filled due to oil and dead skin cells clogging the
pores. Cystic acne is somewhat similar to abscess or skin boils. It feels like a soft, tender lump filled
with fluid and is bigger than the common acne. It might measure up to several centimeters across. Because of
this, cystic acne may lead to permanent scarring or even keloid formation. (Keloids are scar tissue that forms
at the skin's injury site.) It is a relief to know that home remedies are available in treating cystic acne.
Home Remedies for Handling Adult Cysti
Acne
The best treatment for cystic acne is an aloe vera gel and coconut oil mixture.
- Combine 4 teaspoons of organic coconut oil with 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel – to easily remember
it, the ratio is 4:1.
- Wash your face with warm water before dabbing the mixture to acne cysts.
- Do this twice a day.
The coconut oil and aloe vera mixture do not only help fight acne cysts, it also helps lighten scars left by
acne. You can take coconut oil internally as well. Use it for your cooking or add it to prepared dishes. 1-3
teaspoons of coconut oil is enough to help you get more radiant and glowing skin.
Other Causes of Adult Cystic Acne
Deficiency in zinc may be one of the factors in having cystic acne. To know if you are deficient in
zinc, try looking at your fingernails. If you can see white spots then chances are you are
zinc deficient.
It is recommended to take zinc with copper supplements – long-term intake of zinc alone may lead
to copper depletion since zinc prevents the absorption of copper in the gastrointestinal tract.
Start with 50-75 mg zinc with copper supplements for a month. If you do not see changes and you still
continue to have acne cysts, stop taking the supplement. If on the other hand your acne cysts start clearing
up, slowly reduce your zinc with copper supplement dose until you reach its maintenance level which is at
15-30 mg. Take it daily and until your cystic acne is healed.
Many cystic acne sufferers have praised high doses of Vitamin B-5 or pantothenic acid as it
cleared up their acne completely. A recent study has suggested that high doses of Vitamin B-5 or
pantothenic acid cures even the most severe cystic acne cases and helps decrease pore size as well. Taking 10g
of Vitamin B-5 a day improves common and cystic acne – even the severe, deep and painful kind – within a
week to a month.
Continue taking the 10g dose of Vitamin B-5 daily for 2 months. After that, gradually reduce it to
the maintenance dose of 1-3g per day. Because Vitamin B-5 supplements usually come in 500 mg (0.5
g), this will mean 20 pills will be taken each day. Divide it into 2 – take 10 in the morning
and the other 10 at night. Dissolve the pills in a drink for this will be better for your stomach – even if
it tastes bad. You may opt to take smaller doses but this will take longer to see results and improvement.
In severe cystic acne cases, the best treatment is internal treatment (Vitamin B-5 and zinc) with the
regular use of topical cystic acne home remedies. It may take time before you find the best combination of cystic
acne treatments that is best for you.
