When it comes to acne and remedies to clear it up, there are many helpful herbal remedies. Herbs are used to
treat acne chiefly because of their antibacterial properties. Taking acne herbal remedies regularly is a safe and
effective acne treatment. You will have to take it for at least a week in order to see results and
improvement.
Since biblical times, Garlic has been used to fight infection due to its proven antibacterial
properties. It is because of this that Garlic is a great natural cure for acne. It is recommended to take
300 mg of Garlic capsules. However, as garlic is a blood thinner, do not take a capsule before
undergoing surgery or if you are taking anti-coagulant drugs.
Because of its antibacterial and estrogenic effects, Great Burdock is an effective remedy for
acne. Take Burdock root capsules (350mg root powder) thrice daily before having meals. Take
note though that Great Burdock should not be taken by pregnant women and children under 15 years of
age.
Salicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory compound, comes from dried flowers and leaves of
Heartsease. It is effective in curing acne whether it is applied externally or taken as a supplement. For the
best way to treat acne using Heartsease, take 200-400 mg of its extract and divide it into three doses, all
of which are taken before meals.
Oil made form the seeds of Evening Primrose is extremely rich is essential fatty acids which,
in turn, play an important role in prostaglandin synthesis in our body. Prostaglandin is a process which
regulates the action of several hormones as well as anti-inflammatory action. Take 500 mg of Evening Primrose
two to three times a day with meals. A word of warning though, do not take this if pregnant, breastfeeding or
suffering from epilepsy.
Acne and Remedies With Astringent

Herbs which have astringent properties and are applied topically include Aloe Gel and Witch Hazel, while Walnut
Leaf can be used as an astringent wash. For pain and inflammation relief, you may want to try Lavender and Rose
Water.
A common cause of acne which many people may not know is a sluggish liver. If the liver is
not functioning properly, it will not be able to clear excess hormones. So when trying to treat acne, it is
important to balance the hormones and cleanse the liver. The most common and used herb for cleansing and
strengthening the liver is Milk Thistle. It helps remove excess hormones through excretion by
stimulating bile production.
Keep in mind that treating acne is a two-fold approach – internally and topically. Internally, the best
combination in cleansing the liver and the blood with a tincture of Milk Thistle and
Dandelion. The usual dose is 30 drops in a small amount of water. Take these three times daily.
Topically, you can combine any of these herbs – Calendula, Lavender, Tea Tree Oil, Witch Hazel
and Rosewater. The best combinations would depend on your skin’s condition.
